Life was considerably decent for the Castle family. They lived in a two-family home in East Boston and made ends meet with a military stipend, Louise's part-time work at the local bakery, and Marc's co-ownership in a budding automechanic business. Like all families, they met their matches and battled through the tougher times, but always came out stronger in the end. As the youngest Castle grew up, he took note of his parents hard work ethics and intense love for their family.
School, was a different story. James was as wild and reckless as any other child his age, but he came with some added baggage of anger issues. Though he never severely injured another classmate, he had flown off the handle at some even over the slightest of things. This, of course, was dealt with via conduct slips, detention, and occasionally a suspension. At one point, it was suggested that James visit a psychiatrist, but his parents quickly dismissed that idea. This was nothing they couldn't handle themsleves and they were convinced that it was just normal adolescent behavior.
Marc took it upon himself to help his son channel his anger and energy by getting him into sports of all kinds. Whether it was football or hunting, the two were constantly together in an effort to qwell any issues that James may have had. It served him well for many years, channeling his focus and aggression onto the field rather than at anyone else and after awhile he had no issues with it at all.
Up until the death of his father when James was 17, he was almost an entirely different kid. His father's death changed and enforced a lot within the young man - a major change being he enlisted with the military, specifically the marines, just like his father had, come his 18th birthday.
James went on to become a marine sniper and in 2007 he managed to become part of the Marines Special Operations Regime specializing in special recon for two years until he suffered from an injury that led him to be honorably discharged.
Coming home from being in the military since 1992 was kind of a slap in the face for James. The civilian world was different; people were different. He suffered, but not intensely, from PTSD but was given the go ahead from his doctor to apply for a position within the Boston PD. He worked as a beat cop for several years until the beginning of 2014 when he was made a detective, focusing on homicide.
